Sorry to do this but Im absolutely desperate and I know there are a few IT
types in this group...

Im looking for a really simple piece of help desk software, something even
a total numpty end user cant get too flustered using, with a Web front end,
which can handle five named users, accept new calls via email and hopefully
generate automated emails to users when a call is created, updated, closed,
etc. Ive Googled until Im blue in the face and tried several packages but
theyre all much too complicated.

Any ideas anyone? Feel free to email me direct if this looks like it might
annoy anyone.

Thanks for your indulgence,
R.

We are just about to phase out OTRS.
SQL based, does everything you ask and more. Free (well open source at
least) Simple enough to set up that most of my team managed to teach
themselves when necessary.
http://otrs.org/

Were getting rid of it because of a whole load of stuff it *doesnt* do.
Feel free to mail me at
chris at systemlabs dot co dot uk

I might be able to supply it pre-configured on a server that I am about
to get rid of.

You want a request tracker, you do.

Personally Ive installed and used:

http://bestpractical.com/rt/

If you use something like debian the install is pretty much plug-and-play.

The list of alternatives at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Bug and issue tracking software

isnt bad.

Take a look at www.visionproject.se

Hosted service, really great team behind the product (very responsive).

Highly recommended. Happy to take to e-mail if you want to find out
more.

Based on your requirements, someone will pop up and say HP
Servicedesk.

If they do, take a big long run up and kick them straight in the
bollocks.
