I was always quite positive about Microsoft, but dont mind other
operating systems, and yes, I did have a bit of a go at Apple
yesterday.

HOWEVER, today Im VERY anti-Microsoft.

I have two PCs now. This PC, which runs Windows Vista Home Premium
and a new laptop which I bought to remind me of the good old days.

The good old days were when I had 2 computers with the desktop running
Windows XP Pro and the laptop running XP Home. I used to sit
downstairs watching telly with The Family using the laptop and Remote
Desktop Connection to connect up to the PC upstairs with XP Pro.

This was never a problem and was more social than sitting up here all
the time.

TODAY: I bring the XP Home Premium laptop home, take it out of the
box, set up up, connect it to the network, open Remote Desktop
Connection (RDC) and then it doesnt work. No problem, I make sure
its active on both computers and theyre set up to play with RDC,
still nothing.

I have a fanny about with my old BT HomeHub and decide its crap and
doesnt readily configure anything without crashing so go out and buy
a replacement Belkin one as my old Toshiba one doesnt have a reset
button, and only does .11b WiFi (laptop, mobile phone, etc do .11g)
and I cant remember the password for it anyway so a Ł59 Belkin is
then unpacked, configured and everything is connected to it.

Run RDC and still no joy. Rummage through various help forums,
forward ports every which way I can think of, disable Windows Firewall
on both PCs, nothing, disable the Firewall on the router, nothing.

Rummage through help forums as its never been this much trouble
before, try a few more things and are a look around to MS website come
across this link:

Notes
You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers
running Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista
Home Basic N, or Windows Vista Home Premium. You can, however, connect
from those editions of Windows Vista to computers running other
versions of Windows.

I am *not* impressed that MS have, on purpose, fucked the RD Client
and Server to refuse to work on my two PCs with Vista Home Premium.

Then I have an idea... I can use the Windows Anytime Upgrade to
upgrade from one version of Vista to the other, cant I? I have a
look to see how much theyre going to charge me to upgrade from (OEM)
Home Premium to Ultimate. I can upgrade for just... just... just the
small sum of: Ł141 PER COMPUTER.

NOT. FUCKING. LIKELY.

Absolute fucking fucking cunts cunts. Bill Gates, I fucking hate you
tonight.

Also: Ive installed the free RealVNC Server/Viewer on both machines
and thats not fucking working either. Ill have a look to see why
later on or tomorrow but it wouldnt surprise me if MS had blocked
anything remotely useful from going on the bastards.

It was the same in XP. The irony is, if I downgraded this main PC
from Vista to XP Home again I could log into it from my Vista laptop.

Grr!

Thats the same as it always was, RD has never worked to any *home*
version of an MS OS. Try running RD to an XP home box if you dont
believe me.
