After removing old paint from the petrol tank (ebay tatty, cheapo, used
replacement for the very dented one on my sons clr125) then applying
primer, rubbing down, more primer, rubbing down again, several coats of
topcoat with much rubbing in between over several days to allow each coat to
dry it was time to apply the laquer. Halfords petrol resistant lacquer.
Which requires two or three coats and which has to be recoated within 15
mins. So I shake the tin for the required 2 minutes then I test the spray,
then I start the first coat.

I begin spraying before I point it at the tank so that there is a nice free
flowing spray as I start the tank. Keeping it on the move at the right
distance a decent first coat of lacquer forms. So far so good. 15 mins
later the second coat goes on just the same- right up to the point where the
spray can coughs and spits globs onto the tank. I figure I will probably be
able to rub it down eventually so I hold the can upside down and spray at
the wall to clear the nozzle then continue. All seem OK so I begin spraying
again until cough, splutter, splatter, more blobs...aargh! This time it
wont stop spluttering, even with a different nozzle. Perhaps that can is
malfunctioning - no problem Ill use the second can that I bought as a
precaution. Except that the second can doesnt work at all. No matter how
hard I press, even with a different nozzle, nothing...

There is probably enough lacquer on there but the blobs have made a bit of a
mess of the finish. It is takes two weeks before this stuff is dry enought
to rub down and even then it cant be recoated so I just hope I can rub it
down and make it look presentable. FUCKETY FUCKING FUCK! I HATE PAINTING.

Fair point. The problem is that investing in a suitable compressor, paint
gun etc seemed a bit OTT for a Ł15 petrol tank. However, I am beginning to
think a compressor might be a good investment if I get a decent one - impact
wrench alone could justify it.

Halfords Aerosols are absolutely shite IME.

And once youve got an impact gun and an oxyacetylene setup, very few jobs
are a complete pain in the arse. Well, very few excepting the ones requiring
2 foot long fingers.

And an angle grinder...absolutely essential IMO and at least I have one of
those.

I bought a small/medium compressor with accessories and an air impact
gun and to date have never used the impact gun. Ive mostly used the
air duster. Wonderful piece of kit.
