On a trip to Barcelona (MS Teched 2003) was given expenses money in
Dollars and Ł sterling.
Then proceeded to loose said money (in luggage, somewhere) so got
broadly equivilant amount out in Euros. Spent said money on trip,
kept excellent trail of receipts, and returned.
Found euros and sterling on return, hidden in bottom of bag.
I couldnt make things quite balance with receipts as was given $ (for
a trip to Barcelona? why, god, why?) and spent my money in Euros.
Handed it all in to the boss and it seemed everybody else just did not
bother to keep receipts so estimated all costs.
Spent an afternoon with about 8 people sat round a conference table
with the department director trying to sort out all the expenses.
Mine caused the most problems, what with the exchange problem. Turned
out the company was Ł8 better off on my expenses [1], and all expenses
were receipted and allowable.
Total cost to company? about 4 man days plus a half day of a guy on
100k+ a year.
[1] I think. Not sure, really, if it was Ł8 better off or worse off,
but the story sounds better when they are better off. Either way, a
totally negligable amount for the sheer waste of money and time to
sort out the expenses.
We also had the same problem with single beds - co was saving a bit of
money with hotel shares.
