If any of you have seen the news today you might have noticed an item
in the business news about two large well known companies merging.
This means I will be a few thousand quid better off over the next few
months.

After making a selection of luxury purchases and paying off a few
bills Ill probably have about Ł2.5k to waste/invest in a replacement
motorcycle. The budget could increase if required if the machine is
good value for the higher price.

While Mr. Bandit 600 did indeed get a new MOT a couple of weeks ago
its not getting any younger and its getting to the stage now where
Im going to have to start throwing money it to keep it chugging
along. I dont want to give the impression that its not reliable -
it is, its just getting on a bit.

I therefore am looking for a BGN-sized motorcycle at around Ł2.5k.
Obviously its not going to be new but Im quite happy to take
something thats a few years old and is likely to be reliable. Engine
size isnt important, but Id like to be able to open the throttle and
something happen within a reasonable delay.

My list looks something like this but needs some more suggestions:

BMW R1150GS
Triumph Tiger
Suzuki V-Strom

In reality the bike is going to live outside and be used in the hot
sun, rain, snow and ice and live in the moist salty sea air. Itll be
used for daily commuting and for a few jaunts around the UK and Europe
a year.

BMW: Obviously if I went for the Beemer it would probably be five or
six years old for that budget and serviced locally NOT at a BMW dealer
(My nearest one is in Maidstone which is a bit of a run down the
motorway) and I havent given one a proper test ride.

Triumph: Ive given one a test ride and while it was okay I didnt
fall in love with it. Nearest Triumph dealer is in Canterbury so
wont be too difficult to get it serviced.

Suzuki: I really did like this bike but it looks quite expensive to
drop and I might have go over budget to grab one. Nearest Suzuki
dealer is about 20 seconds from work so getting it serviced wont be
an issue.

My list doesnt have much variety on it. Does anyone have any other
suggestions for tell person bikes <-- Doesnt have to be a tourer at
all.

Thanks.

I doubt that youll get an 1150GS for 2.5k thats not bent. Id budget around
4k minimum for something very leggy. You may get a decent 1100GS for 3-4k
though.

That said, the bloke who bought my Adventure was about your size and hes
reportedly very happy with the bike.

Oh, and the BMW dealer in Maidstone - if such a beast actually exists - is a
car dealer. The closest bike dealer is Coopers in Tunbridge Wells. But you
dont want to go there, you want to use BGM Motorcycles in Pembury - the
blokes the ex-head mechanic of the previous Tun Wells dealership and very,
very good. After my experience with BMW dealers hes the only guy Im letting
near mine.

KTM 950 Adventure, although thats probably outside your budget. Nearest
dealer I know of is in Ashford...

This was my thought too. If BGN wants a GS then he might need to amend
his luxury purchase priorities and shove some cash into the bike fund.

Shame the V Strom selling frenzy just seems to have passed on ukrm.

When I said Ł2.5k I meant Ł3.5k.

Typo - I meant Ł3.5k - Which should get me a Tiger in reasonable
condition.
