Ordered the new PC today so need to start thinking about transferring things
over. Ive got about 80Gb of files/documets/music on a 160Gb hard disk
running XP Home and the new PC also has a 160 Gb hard disk but running Vista
Premium.

I could connect both to the home network and run it overnight copying but I
wondered whether there is a simpler method?

Take the old drive out, connect it to the new machine and copy away ...
indeed many new harddrives come with software utilities to facilitate such a
thing .. check out Maxtor website, I think the ware was called Max-Blast
last time I used it. Worked very well and faster than I thought it would.

Do you need the old computer?

If not stick the old hard drive in the new machine as a slave. You can then
delete programs and stuff from the old hard drive and have a 320 Gb machine.

Assuming, of course, that his old drive is SATA.

Thanks to all. I assume the direct connection v network copy is only faster
with no other advantages?

What are your backups like? Buy an external USB or Firewire disk,
copy your files to it from the old, thence to the new, and keep the
external disk as a backup. 160 GB is under Ł50 and leaves room for
further incremental backups.
