It seems the only time I need to use wireless and its a fsking
headache.

Ive got it all setup and its ticketyboo but when I restrict access by
MAC address to just this laptop it wont connect/cuts off but when I
allow all it connects.

What gives?

There is a box to manually enter MAC addresses but the MACs dont seem
to stay there. Ive tried adding it via the update connected PCs list
but its just not going to have it.

Any ideas apart from nuking it from orbit or throwing it out of the
window?

Am I really much safer with MAC filtering? Ive got the mother of all
WEP keys and the passphrase I dont think anyone could guess in a night
so am I being paranoid or what? Actually fuck it, I do want MAC
filtering, its just another layer of security.

What I CBA, Ill change the WEP to WPA-PSK.

Ta for listening to me blithering on.

Anyone with the motivation and knowledge to crack your WEP key can spoof
your MAC address too.

Pop around to your local Maplin and ask about mains networking.

Using a d-link and firefox? Try IE instead. Im not sure why, but
sometimes FF doesnt work well with my router.

Id also make the above switch you suggest, if you kit handles it.

Yes. The MAC address is passed unencrypted anyway, as is the SSID. If
youre paranoid, youll get much more security from using WPA for a start.
But I wouldnt bother TBH....despite what the press would have you believe,
WEP is not that crackable - you have to garner a fair bit of data to have
an evens chance and, unless youre on Dubbyas hitlist, whos going to
bother?

If youre really, really bothered use WPA: Itll provide much more security
than restricting MAC addresses, not broadcasting SSIDs etc.

I would suggest that your being overly cautious, unless your running a
business etc and dont want to get hacked.

Also depends if range is an issue, as I have found that WEP-PSK seems to
have an effect on the range - reduces it. So sometimes Ive used MAC
filtering instead - although MAC addresses can easily be forged - but
you have to know what to forge it to!

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Anthony x
saying something like:

Spawn of the devil, that stuff. All it does is add to the RF pollution.
