What do you folks reckon to fitting an Ohlins steering damper to a
2003 R6? I have been advised by a couple of people to have one but
just wondered if they were worth the cost Ł250 - Ł300? Are Ohlins the
best on the market or are there better alternatives. I dont really
plan to use my bike for track days or anything like that - just riding
on the roads, but the people who have advised me reason that because
the R6 is very twitchy it is a worthwhile investment. So what do you
think about it?

The mille has one, with a ridiculous number of settings, and i have
set it to one or zero normally.

Having it set higher up makes it feel stiffer and unresponsive
especially at slow speeds.

Im a believer that if the bike im riding is twitchy the probable
cause is rider input, then suspension setup, then suspension
components and if you need a damper then put one on.

Sure steering dampers have their place but if *you* dont think its a
problem i wouldnt worry about it.

Are you having problems with the bike shaking as you go over
small bumps or exit corners at speed? If not then firstly try
harder and secondly wait until you have a problem then buy a
damper.

I think an equally good investment would be a polite letter to Mr Yamaha
asking him why he is selling bikes with shite steering in the first
place.

Of course you paying attention to other aspects of the suspension set up
by use of proper adjustment may well go some way towards solving the
problem.

In the past people have also mentioned Sprint dampers, that apparently
use one of the previous Ohlins designs and are much cheaper.

Have a groups.google and see whats been said.

My only observation about the Ohlins is thats its still essentially a
linear damper. I think Matris do a non linear by which I mean it doesnt
intrude much at normal steering input speeds and stiffens considerably at
tank slapping velocity. Then again it could be Hyperpro (or both)
