and can advise me on the ins and outs.

Please.

I can get that far on my own, I need to speak to someone about
this sort of file and the options therein.

I think a little less cryptic info would be useful.

What do you want to speak about.

Creating this sort of file, viewing this sort of file, editing this sort of
file, converting this sort of file, creating something from this sort of
file .... etc

Not that I know fuck all about them, because I dont, but I know theyre
used in an industry that Im connected with.

Thanks. I am hoping that from one CAD file (*.stl, as I
understand it) different sized models can be made.
ie Are all the dimensions relative to one another so that if one
measurement is changed, then all the others change relative to
it, and the design maintains its integrity?

You can scale them (if thats what you mean) but generally cant import
them into CAD programmes. Or if you can import them, cant edit them.
Since STLs are a triangular mesh approximating the original surfaces of
a CAD file you have to be a bit careful when scaling because youre not
increasing the number of triangles, merely their size. If youre doing
much work with them, a simple programme like Solidview or Magics
Communicator is useful:

Wot e said. An .stl (Stereo Lithography) file is just a surface
approximation from a CAD program, *usually* used for rapid prototyping. If
you want to scale one and keep the (albeit rough) dimensional accuracy of
the parent 3D model youd be better off obtaining the original CAD file,
scale that, and then save as an .stl.

That sounds the the one I want.
So from the CAD file (if I can get one made from the photo) I can
develope various .stl files in the sizes I want?
