Back up there somewhere in the election thread there was
some discussion over Thatcher cynically manipulating the
Falklands war for electoral advantage.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4597581.stm

Which not only indicates that she *could* have perverted
the war, but also offers some insight into why governments
might sometimes take underhand actions with the best of
intentions.

If you want cynical manipulation you need no better an example, and one
more devastating for people affected by it, than your elected prime
minister dealings with Bush.

No need whatsoever to dig into history.

While I completely respect your argument in terms of political plotting
to stand valid, surely the Falklands must be the icing on the top of
the cake of lost soles, compared to the recent Gulf war?

Icing? On missing fishcakes?

As for the trivia .... Thats only part of the story (although whoever
gave such cumudgeonly rules of engagement to Dreadnaught (was that these
are my principles ... Owen?) should be imprisoned for - We can do that
list later, itll be longish)

Anyway, the missing bit of the saga -
Im pretty sure that after the frigates and submarine bit Bill Callaghan
then stationed an Ice breaker as a deterent in or near the Falkland.
Thatcher decided that cost money, and as no private sector buyer wanted to
buy it scrapped it instead .... despite howls from the FCO warning the
Argentinians would read that as a diplomatic way of saying we cant be
bothered, you can have the dump.

Really? Said Maggie, allegedly. Wondering, also allegedly, how to win
the imminent election.

The rest (including the bit about she didnt look re-electable at the
time)is , as they say, the bit about what happened a while back.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Antoine
saying something like:

Stik-Tite; puts the boot on the other foot.
