I had to go to the DTI today, in Victoria Street, to get some
statistics. Regular thing, every month or two.

DTI opens at 9am. I arrived ten minutes early, turned immediately to the
visitors half of the staircase (two stairwways, you see), saw it was
cordoned off, turned about, grinned sheepishly at the security girl,
went up the other staircase, past another security bod, through the two
armoured doors, and into the records office.

Normally theres a security guard there as well, but he hadnt taken up
his post.

Nice lady inside the records office knows me (we solve the occasional
Times crossword clue together when we need a break) and she looks
startled.

How did you get in here?

Er, um, just walked up?

Security guard pokes nose round door, sees me, and his eyes boggle. How
the hell did you get in here?

I just told her.

Telephone calls, and shit hits fan. Not directed at me, but apparently
theyre at alert Code Black (whatever that is), and somebodys security
job is now in jeopardy. Oo-er.

Never mind. Im there now, so I ask nice lady to log me on. Oh, wait a
moment, Ive got to get the password.

I was in a hurry, so without thinking, I said: Its XXXXX.

If her mouth had opened any wider, shed have trapped flies. How do you
know that?

I explain that I like solving crosswords, which she knows already, and I
saw someone type the first few letters of the password a long while
back, and thought it was odd, and deduced the rest of it. That was a
year ago - it hasnt been updated since. Naughty.

Anyway, if anyone has to go to any government building in the near
future, and finds theyre extra-hot on security, sorry and all that.

black used to mean that all passes had to be shown and visitors signed in.

In the 80s, black meant something like no IRA threats for at least
two months or so it seemed. I dont know if its still the same, but
because of the bomb threat they never signed government offices, and
theyd answer the phone with Unicorn House (or whatever the building
was called), rather than the dept. name.

Seeing as we still have a dozen or so people interned, Id have expected
all gov. buildings to be at red, due to the obviously severe emergency
situation...

Were on red - High Alert. This means that if the security guard in his hut
is awake, he might check your pass before opening the gate.

Snip subterfuge..

Given that I work for the biggest American insurance broking firm, which
has been a target of various anti-globalisation groups etc over the
years, I was quite surprised when I walked straight into the office the
other day without security batting an eyelid - given that I was wearing
tatty combat trousers, a grubby black biking jacket and carrying a
bright red 20 litre jerry can[1], I though someone might have at least
said excuse me sir.....

[1] Needed to drain the fuel tank into somethning so I could Petseal
it, so bought the jerry can at Machine Mart on The Highway on the way to
work...
