Hello all, having come to the conclusion that a big Guzzi is a bit
beyond my financial means at the moment, Im on the lookout for
something for around 2 grand.
Ive got a Guzzi 750 at the mo, and love it, but, I just feel like
getting something else.
Ideally 2k will get a Ducati 750ss with 5000 miles on the clock, but I
think Ill be waiting for that for a long time.
SV650s sound nice, but the fairings do look a bit like jelly moulds
dont they?
So, looking through the ads today, there are a number of TRX850s
available for less than Ł2000.
Now, never having even sat on one before - what are they like?
Good handling?
Real stickiness in the bends?
The v-twin motor, presumably torquey if it came out of the TDM - is it
the same motor as the TDM?
And any other info/opinions on them?
Thanks a lot.
Alan.

Other than they are not V-Twins?
Ł2k-2.5k will get you a fairly nice Lemans2/3 anyway through the private
ads, so why bother with the TRX?
They do sound nice on loud cans though.

Yep, a slip of the fingers there. The parallel twins!
Ive gone off the big Guzzi a little.
They are big fat bastards, with the rattly top end, though I do fancy a
V11, but they are just a bit out of my price range - Im limiting myself
to Ł2000, otherwise Ill be looking for something just a lttle bit
better all the time.
As for an older Guzzi, I cant see the point really,I know they wont lose
any value (probably gain),but my current Targa 750 is plenty fast
enough, and handles exceptionally, but the top-end rattles are
irritating, leg room is a bit limited, and I just fancy a change, though
give it 2 more weeks, and I may change my mind and go out and buy it a
set of stainless pipes, which will force me to keep it for another
year, just to get some value back.
Ta
Alan.

I thought so when I had mine, but compared to my blade it was shit.
I always felt like the front was going to wash out on left handers [1]

> Real stickiness in the bends?

Enough for knee down antics.

> The v-twin motor, presumably torquey if it came out of the TDM - is it
> the same motor as the TDM?

Lots of torque, but its all over by 7000 rpm. I thought it was quite fast
in a straight line up to 120 mph
beyond than it was like going backwards [2].
If youre after a bargain then Id say go for it. Take a ride on one.
If you buy it, get some loud cans, R1 forks and R1 brakes [3] some good semi
synthetic oil [4]and youll have a sorted machine. Theres a good group on
Yahoo who will help you out.

[1] This is partially due to me having a spill on a left hander.
[2] Especially on the straights at Snetterton.
[3] These bolt straight on.
[4] They burn a bit you see, and if you dont get the right oil, the clutch
slips.

As one whos got a 750SS and has ridden a Trixie (and doubtless SteveH,
who had a Trixie and has ridden a 750SS, will be along in a minute....

The Trixie is the basis for a great bike, in that the frame is good, it
looks nice, and the engine is torquey and powerful enough.

There it ends.

The suspension is pretty low-rent. The gearbox lets the engine down, as
it does on the TDM. The seat is bloody awful, and for a pillion its
murder. The brakes are pretty feeble. Worst of all, it sounds and feels
utterly anonymous.

The forks can be upgraded, the rear shock replaced, the calipers
replaced with R1 units, and the stock cans junked for something like Bos
ones. Dunno what you can do about the seat, and youll never be able to
do anything about the gearbox. But youll have a nice bike by then.

I thought it was pretty crappy, actually. Its faster in a straight line
than my SS, but not by much, and on anything other than a motorway the
SS pisses all over it because of the handling and braking.

And the SS offers incredible feedback, which the Trixie doesnt. You
know exactly what the SS is doing, what the tyres are doing, everything.
Its also way lighter.

Finally, the SS is easier and cheaper to service, especially come valve
check time.

Id opt for the 750S every single time. I think you might be lucky to
find a 5000-miler for ukp2000 - Id expect you to pay nearer 2700 for
one as low-mileage as that. Certainly 2.5k.

SV650? Everyone loves em: Ive never ridden one.

Now see, that was silly. Not the spelling, mind. Everybody thought you did
that deliberately.
Should have kept quiet...

All in all, a very honest reply. Cant fault any of it. especially the
gearbox. I alwaysthought the Guzzi was bad until I rode a TRX.
